Two different versions of
programmable oscillators are available. One that can be Field Instantly
Programmable (FIPO) and one that can be programmed on the-fly (MIPO). FIPO
programmable oscillators were evaluated for infusion into NASA Programs and
Projects. Evaluation tests included: radiation testing (both single event
latchup (SEL) and total ionizing dose (TID)), construction analysis, low
temperature testing and screening and qualification methodology. The testing
showed that these programmable oscillators could be utilized by NASA projects
provided the projects are able to accommodate the following guidelines: use a
resistor in series and be able to reboot the system for SEL, the total dose
requirement is no higher than 10 krads and are able to use the SMD package.
This has been a highly leveraged
task with support from NASA Projects, other NASA Centers, the NEPAG Group and
the manufacturer. The test results obtained during this evaluation have been
fed back to the manufacturer to enable them to continuously improve the product
reliability. The near-term goal is for the manufacturer to offer FIPO as a
standard flight product. The MIPO evaluation was started and will continue into
the next fiscal year.The DS1077 is a dual-output, programmable, oscillator
requiring no outside components for operation.
The DS1077 can be used as a
processor-controlled frequency synthesizer or as a standalone oscillator. The
two-synchronous output operating frequencies are user-adjustable in
submultiples of the master frequency through the use of a divider and two
on-chip programmable prescalers. The specific output frequencies chosen are
stored in non-volatile (EEPROM) memory. The DS1077 defaults to these values
upon power-up in the programmable oscillators market.
The DS1077 features a 2-wire
serial interface that allows in-circuit on-the-fly programming of the
programmable prescalers (P0 & P1) and divider (N) with the desired values
being stored in NV (EEPROM) memory. Design changes can be accommodated in-circuit
on-the-fly by simply programming different values into the device (or
reprogramming previously programmed devices). Alternatively, for fixed
frequency applications, previously programmed devices can be used and no
connection to the serial interface is required in the programmable oscillators
market.
